I am a mother to a 11 year old and I ran throughout my pregnancy (5 marathons) and through his childhood. Here are some challenges and solutions I found about being a mother runner!

Problem: Finding time to run.

Running requires time and energy, which are often scarce for busy moms. One solution is to run early in the morning, before the kids wake up, or in the evening, after they go to bed. Another option is to run with a stroller, or join a running group with other moms who can share childcare duties.

I used to run with a stroller and it was the first baby purchase I made! Now that my son is in school during the day my default is taking him to school and going for a run mid-morning. I plan my schedule accordingly, if I have to do a long run on a school day rather than the weekend, I’ll make it happen.

Problem: Balancing running and family. Running can be a great way to relieve stress and stay healthy, but it can also take away time and attention from the family. One solution is to involve the family in running, by inviting them to join for a fun run, a race, or a training session. Another option is to communicate with the family about the benefits of running, and how it makes you a happier and better mom.

To be honest, this is never an easy one, and there are times my training is consuming family time and I get called out for it.

Problem: Dealing with injuries and fatigue. Running can be hard on the body, especially if you are not getting enough rest and recovery. Running injuries can sideline you for weeks or months, and affect your mood and motivation. One solution is to listen to your body, and avoid overtraining or pushing yourself too hard. Another option is to cross-train with other activities, such as yoga, swimming, or cycling, that can improve your fitness and prevent boredom.

I’ve noticed the biggest challenge will be after a tough race, the last thing I want to do is go play in the playground because I’m so sore!
