NYC Marathon is coming up for 50,000 runners. Are you one of them? One part of marathon training is tapering.

Tapering for a marathon is the process of gradually reducing your training volume and intensity before the race. It is important to taper because it allows your body to recover from the hard work you have done during your training and to reach your peak performance on race day.

There is no one-size-fits-all tapering plan, but most marathoners follow a three-week taper, where they cut back their mileage by 20 to 30 percent each week. They also reduce the length and intensity of their long runs and speed workouts, while maintaining some easy runs and cross-training.

It can feel funny to taper. Some people experience anxiety, some will have aches and pains. Personally I worry that I’m not doing enough before a race. A few years ago, I wouldn’t take her at all but once I started, my performances on race day would be far better.
