Running the New York City Marathon is an amazing experience, but it can also be a challenging one. Here are three things a beginner should know:

🏃‍♀️ Prepare for the weather. The NYC Marathon is held in early November, which means the weather can be unpredictable. You might encounter cold, wind, rain, or even snow on race day. 2022 was incredibly hot and humid, which took a lot of people (including myself) by surprise. Bring layers to keep warm before the race starts.

🏃‍♀️ Pace yourself. The NYC Marathon course is not flat, and it has some tough hills, especially on the bridges. This is definitely the toughest World Marathon Major course. Don't start too fast or you might burn out later and don’t waste too much energy trying to weave around people at the start. Try to run by effort rather than by pace, and don’t be discouraged when you hit the Queensborough Bridge at mile 15, the long climb is the toughest spot in my opinion.

🏃‍♀️ Use the crowd to your advantage. I’ve run over 100 marathons and there is no place with spectators like New York City. Put your name on your shirt and people will be cheering you the whole 26.2 miles!
