💊MEDICATION ADMINISTRATION OVERVIEW

There are TWO types of routes you need to know in nursing school:

1️⃣PARENTERAL= medication BYPASSES the GI TRACT (think IV, SQ, IM)

2️⃣NONPARENTERAL= medication does not involve puncture of the skin (think oral, nasal, sublingual)

Another thing you MUST know in nursing school is the medication rights. I have seen anywhere from 6-12 depending on the program, but these are the ones I learned!

1️⃣Right PATIENT

2️⃣Right TIME

3️⃣Right DOSE

4️⃣Right MEDICATION

5️⃣Right ROUTE

6️⃣Right DOCUMENTATION

With this, you want to make sure BEFORE you give a medication it meets any specified parameters and do the needed assessment 🩺
