govt job = iron rice bowl??? 🍚

I have been working in the government for arnd 4 years and have been in ministry, stat board, and home team 💼

here are some ppl's impression abt the public service:

1) Zuoboh 💤

I thought so too before I joined the government, but sadly no...working in the govt can come with a lot of responsibilities because on top of your core work, you are often roped into different projects that are not part of your job scope 🥹 I always have stuff to do, but I'll say there is still work-life balance because even though there is always work to do, there is no expectation for you to work overtime to complete it (at least for my division).

2) Iron Rice Bowl 🏋🏻‍♀️

Now it's a plastic rice bowl la...because all new hires start out with contracts and not permanent schemes anymore, so if you don't perform well, there is a chance you won't be extended/emplaced after your contract ends. But during the recession I guess it is still more secure compared to private sector cos u will nvr hear abt mass retrenchment in the public sector

3) Good money and benefits 🤑

You can't get rich working in a govt job, but you also won't be poor, the pay is just average...The benefits are not too bad, we do get free tickets to zoo,night safari and gardens by the bay etc...but the medical and dental coverage can be better imo. My friends in MNCs are fully covered for their medical and dental expenses, but the govt usually has some co-payment involved.

what do you think? is private>public or the other way around?
