Favorite Travel Spots

This spot is practically in my backyard but it’s a favorite that I go back to time and time again. If you ever get to Michigan, make sure to find a day to spend on Mackinac Island. You’ll have to take a ferry to get there (go at the right time and the ferry will take you under the Mackinac Bridge) and be prepared to walk or rent a bike to get around. There are NO motorized vehicles on the island.

Once on the island, you’ll find yourself on Main Street which is filled with shops, bars and restaurants. One of my favorites is the Great Turtle Brewery. People rant and rave about The Pink Pony but I’m still trying to get there myself. The island is home to Fort Mackinac, which you can tour and explore. The also a butterfly house that many love.

If walking isn’t for you, you can rent bikes or horse drawn carriages. We rented a bike for $11/hr and hightailed it around the island in an hour to bring the bikes back in time. You can take more time but we were trying to fit in as much as possible.

I haven’t stayed on the island yet but one day I’d like to stay at The Grand Hotel. We camped at the Straits State Park in St. Ignace on my last trip to the island. It’s a great park for camping and the beach has views of the Mackinac Bridge. There’s also a hiking trail at the campground to see a different view of the bridge.
