fight the sweltering hot or cold chilly weather at tong ah eating house, where it retains a very old-school interior but is well-furnished with air-con. they execute their kaya butter toast in 3 styles — ultra thin, regular and plain/steamed toast 👍🏻 my favourite is the ultra thin version for that extra crisp and messy breakfast vibe! they make their own kaya so it definitely starkly different from what you’ll get elsewhere!

starting operations as early as 6am, you know you’ll get a real local experience at this nostalgic coffeeshop. toasted over charcoal, it is definitely a sight to behold as you watch the uncle delicately prepare each toast and cup of coffee / tea. the ambiance itself is truly something unique to experience as you munch on your breakfast toast. remember to come early to avoid the snaking queues 🤯

sin hoe huat cafe

this is one of my hidden gems that many will probably not have heard of. this stall is located in sembawang hills food centre, which may not necessarily be the most convenient to get to via public transport. however, this one-of-a-kind emperor bun is definitely worth travelling for 🤩 crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, this was such a lovely rendition of the kaya butter toast that i absolutely adore.

if you ask around for recommendations, almost everyone i know thinks of yakun. while yakun is also my go-to spot, i have come to discover other spots to experience this classic breakfast traditionally. use this guide for your next kaya butter toast hopping adventure 💥
