Complete Guide : Choosing Engagement Ring

This is a layman’s guide to selecting an engagement ring. Honestly, I was such a noob in this process so I’ll share with you what I’ve learnt in this journey 🥰

1. Labgrown vs Natural💎: This honestly boils down to the budget that you have assigned to purchasing an engagement ring. I had concerns such as resale value initially but I decided that (1) it is very unlikely I would sell the ring and (2) the decrease in value for a natural diamond might be the full value of a labgrown diamond. Initially, I wanted the Goldheart Celestial Series. However, the price tag was so hefty I couldn’t justify it.

2. 4Cs 📋- In order of importance: Cut, Colour, Clarity and Carat. But honestly, I would say your personal preference. If you don’t put the diamonds side by side (which you don’t on a daily basis), you might not be able to tell the difference. So, go with your heart and decide one that you prefer.

3. Shape & Design of the Ring 🔘: You can spend some time to decide the shape you would like your diamond in (e.g. Round, Oval, Pear etc). Also, do consider if you will want a halo around the diamond as it can make the diamond look bigger than its carat!

4. How it looks on your finger 🖐️: This is a tip from my work bestie! It’s always important to try out how the ring will look on your fingers. The lighting in the shop is often brighter as compared to your home/office. Hence, do try it out rather than seeing it from the microscope!

5. Plans for the wedding ring 💍: As the band of my ring is not a straight cut, there would be a gap if I were to stack my wedding ring with the engagement ring. To me, I’m okay with this as I am not too particular about the gap/might not stack them. I find straight cut too serious? There are also some stores that sell both wedding rings and engagement ring together such that it fits exactly if this is a big consideration for you!

6. Safety 👩🏻‍🔬: I’ve read some reviews that 4 prongs could be dangerous as the diamond might fall out if one side is loose. I’m quite a 粗鲁 aka careless girl so I prefer it to have more prongs to secure the diamond!

7. Customisation: For Jann Paul, they offer free customisation. I prefer a timeless design so I did not include any customisation. But I’ve heard from the Salesperson that there are people adding in Pooh or Bees? They will also show you a 3D modeling as well. But do take note that this could increase the time taken to prepare your ring!

Do not be shy! Walk through the traditional brands (e.g. SK, Lee Hwa, Taka, Goldheart etc) and trendy brands (e.g. Jann Paul, Michael Trio, etc) and find something that you truly like. If you are in SG, you can check out the road at Orchard Road (out from Orchard MRT to Wisma) as there are quite a few options. For Jann Paul and Michael Trio etc, you might need an appointment so do call in early.
