heyya zesties 🍋, here's a background of me: i'm a software engineer in a bank - specifically app security.

it is a challenging job that requires a lot of creativity to solve problems, along with technical and logical thinking skills. if you're wondering what a typical day of a software engineer is like, here's a glimpse into mine:

❗️disclaimer: not every day is like this, but it is my 9-5 in this period!

1️⃣ before work:

6.30am - i get up and wash up and leave my house by

7.10am - i catch the bus to head to CHANGI BUSINESS PARK. i usually work on Lemon8 posts or nap on the bus, and reach office around

8.40am - yes, it takes around 1h 30min for me to get to work, dont remind me how far i live from the office 😭 i have some breakfast and coffee and then turn on my com

2️⃣ start of work day:

9am! i read the latest news for the day and check for any new JIRA tickets to fix them. i'm usually the first one in office, so if anything is wrong in the User Acceptance Testing (UAT) environment, i'm the one to fix it so that testers will be able to continue with their work.

i then work on my feature for the sprint (a term used in software development - a set period of time where specific tasks such as enhancements must be completed).

when my colleagues come into office, we discuss any issues we faced in the previous day and try to debug it together. sometimes, I will allocate time to read up more about the topic so that I will be able to fix the issue in the future.

3️⃣ lunch:

12.30pm! i usually opt for caifan at the company cafeteria because the nearby mall is too expensive 😭 $4 caifan vs a $15 meal at the mall!

we then finish our meal around 1pm, and i further work on lemon8 posts till about 1.30pm. sometimes i choose to nap for about 10mins at my table.

4️⃣ after lunch:

i grab my second cup of coffee for the day. i work on upgrading certain dependencies in the UAT environment and document these upgrade steps to do the same for Production (prod) environment (the environment where live users see and interact with the product).

i usually grab a snack such as fruits or chips to help my brain to think better around late afternoon.

i work closely with the Mobile team, and they test stuff that calls my team's API (application programming interface - a way for two or more computer programs to communicate with each other). if it doesn't work, they'll usually reach out to me to help debug with them. i'll then check the server logs for any errors or exception that requires fixing on their side or my side.

5️⃣ after work

6pm! i usually leave the office to catch my (only) bus back at this end the day with some Valorant. however, tonight, we have a Change Request (CR) scheduled.

CR takes place during off-peak hours to minimize the impact to users of the software.

here i have my third cup of coffee for the day and grab some dinner. after which, i head to the prod room to apply my steps, which i prepared in UAT to upgrade or fix the system. on good days, CR ends at 10pm, but it sometimes ends at 5am 😭

if issues crop up in the prod environment and it extends till the start of work day the next day, we will get boxed 📦 by our bosses or live users.

andddd that's basically the glimpse into my day as a software engineer ✨️ it's a highly stressful job (especially in the bank) but also highly rewarding! let me know what you think of it 🫶

it's not so much of 9am to 5pm, it's more like 9am to 6pm or 9am to 5am ☠️

job rating: 8/10 🤡🤡 can be better
