It’s so sad to say but I’ve long given up on local brands and rarely buy from them. There’s so many reasons why, but I’ll start with the reasons that can be seen in the pictures - lousy fit.

Measurements: 152cm; 42KG.

1) Extremely long pants/skirts/dresses (p1/2)

Who exactly are these clothes catered for? I am aware that certain brands do have petite sizing for certain items, however not all of their outfits are petite friendly at all. Take p1-2 for example, who are these pants for?! They are so EXTREMELY long that I feel like only the high 160s and 170s can wear these comfortably. While I know I’m not near the average female Singaporean height, but how many of us are near 170? They need to bfr - don’t cater to your models, cater to your normal everyday typical Singaporean. I’ve literally bought a maxi dress in Italy that I could wear without any length alteration required (pics to come in future), and the brand is obviously catered for the Caucasian built. Meanwhile I can’t wear pants from a local brand 🗿

2) Weird cutting? (p3/4)

This dress was cute, but what is up with this décolleté area?!!? How many of us have such a long décolleté, save for tall folk? I was wearing stick-ons that day, and deliberately wore it lower for any low cut clothes. And you could STILL see them poking out SO prominently! I forgot to take a full body pic, but because that dress was so low cut, the whole outfit looked so off. My measurements looked totally weird and it was so unflattering.

3) Basic designs (p5)

No comments on this basic ass dress, cos if you can screw up a plain shirt dress then… ?????? But is it worth the price? Not sure, but it’s definitely comfortable for sure! If you’re looking for quality then this is for you. Otherwise, I’m 101% sure you can find a dress that looks like that on Taobao/Shopee.

4) Unflattering cut (p6/7)

Unless you’re TALL tall and extremely skinny, this dress probably won’t do you justice. Yes, I am aware that it’s meant to be a loose fitting flare cut, but it just isn’t the most flattering. Albeit very comfortable. Also, what’s with the huge armholes? No bra or strapless bra is gonna work with this. You’ll have to go with stick-ons!

5) Similar designs everywhere

For some reason, the few local brands we have all have rather similar designs. Just slight twists here and there, or in different colours. Maybe it’s because our brands aren’t adventurous with their prints and always like to use basic plain colours, which makes things worse. Or maybe it’s just because all the designs are oh so basic. Basic shorts, basic crop tees, basic spaghetti tops, basic flare skirts. It ends up like the whole of Singapore is wearing the similar clothes!??! Is it just me who thinks that or…

6) Price point

Some stores need to BFFR. Plain ass designs like basic coloured racerbacks for $30+?? Albeit padded, but still. In this economy?!? Their price points are just not competitive enough with overseas online stores like Taobao on shopee. For example as seen in p8/9, I could get a beautiful dress from Vietnam via Shopee at $40+, but pay the same or more expensive price for a super plain dress in SG?!!? AND THE VIETNAMESE DRESS FITS ME PERFECTLY. It’s one of my favourite pieces of all time.

Don’t get me wrong, I do have a few (two specifically) local brands that I occasionally take a look at, namely Lovet and TTR. I really do like their clothes! However a lot of the time, I do get disappointed by either the cut/fit or price points. Unfortunately, it does not seem like petites are their target audience. But I can’t change my height, so I’ll be shopping elsewhere until the day they decide to improve 🥲
