GETTING RID OF FUNGUS GNAT INFESTATION 👩🏽‍🔬🦟

If ever there was an anti-green thumb, I am it. My mom gave me a 15 year old bonsai tree once. I tried to repot it and it didn’t survive. RIP Eric. My snake plant Mojo (cover photo) is also no more and those are notoriously hard to kill! (I forgot him on the balcony 🫢)

So when my biggest plant baby, Spike (Dracaena Marginata), got fungus gnats I was mortified. At first I thought they were fruit flies coming out of the drains. Then I noticed the buggers were crawling out of and all over his soil 🤢

After much googling (and many weeks of drought) I decided to repot him into Lechuza Pon, fully expecting him to perish like Eric the Bonsai. Lechuza Pon doesn’t have organic matter and doesn’t hold moisture like soil does and that’s apparently why gnats can’t survive in it 🙅🏽‍♀️

Even with help from my baby sister, it took us 4 hours to detangle and wash his roots but it worked! He lost a lot of leaves from the stress and looked like a flat greasy hair day for weeks. But now he’s perky, healthy and thriving 🥹

I am never going back to soil 😒
