AMBIENCE— why I never use “The BIG Light” 💡

Lighting is more than a functional necessity; it’s an easy and effective way to transform the mood of any space. 🪄

When I was a student, the first thing I’d do after moving in was change the blinding white light to a warmer, dimmer bulb, then adding a lampshade to soften the harsh glare to a moody glow. Back then, that was enough. But after a year and a half in my apartment, it’s become clear that I really really don’t like overhead lighting. 🤢

The “big” lights in my bedroom and living room start off dim and get brighter every 30 seconds. The problem is I can’t control how bright they get. Once at full brightness, the lights are harsh, unflattering and just make for an unpleasant and unwelcoming environment. So I opt not to use them at all. There are exceptions of course — like, I don’t go assembling furniture with ambient lighting because that’s silly and unsafe. 🙅🏽‍♀️

Down the line, I want to add LED lights, floor lamps and (far into the future) a moody pendant to my collection. But now, I rely on my table lamps, candles and the softer under-cabinet spotlights in my kitchen to light up my home and create the inviting atmosphere I need after a hard day. 💆🏽‍♀️
