things i wish i knew before becoming a cat mom

As someone who very unexpectedly became a cat mother over the pandemic, I was ridiculously unprepared. I’d only ever had dogs and didn’t know the first thing when it came to cats.

Three years later, my cat is my best friend, and I’ve picked up a lot of tips and tricks along the way:

- Cats have insane personalities. My little guy Charlie is the most moody, talkative, and cute cat. He will let me know when I annoy him, and then he’ll lay on me and fall asleep 3 minutes later. Cats have big personalities and they’re all very different.

- If you don’t overhaul the entire little box every few weeks, it will smell like ammonia. No matter how often you clean it, every three to four weeks - throw away all of the litter and pour in a fresh box. Trust me. It’s not fun when you’re literally smelling ammonia.

- They love strings. While it’s cute sometimes, watch out for when they eat things they shouldn’t be, like shoelaces, hair ties, the box spring material (lol), and necklaces. This could be super dangerous to them but they love anything string-like out of instinct. Be cautious!

- Open your window. If your cat is like mine and isn’t an outside cat (he’s tried climbing into my neighbors’ yards many times,) open the window so they can get some fresh air. My cat’s favorite activity is watching the birds and squirrels outside (and his supervised outside time.)
