The Perfect Dishwasher (Part 1)

Choosing the perfect dishwasher for your home could be a bit overwhelming if you don’t know where to start.

Regardless what brand you are going for, consider the following factors:

✅ How many people are in your household?

✅ How often do you cook/bake at home?

✅ Are you hosting often?

Capacity of a dishwasher is measured by place setting. If a dishwasher is said to have 6 place setting, it means that the dishwasher is designed for 6people set of dishes (plates, cutlery, glass, bowl) used in a three course meal, excluding pots and pans.

So if you have a big family and cook regularly like ours, definitely you will need a bigger capacity dishwasher. We get a 13 place settings dishwasher. Even if we don’t have many plates cutleries to wash at times, we would need the space for pots and pans. If the family is having lunch and dinner at home, we would definitely run our dishwasher at full capacity at the end of the day.

💡Pro tips:

If space allowed, do consider bigger dishwasher regardless your family size. It is more time and energy efficient to fully load up a bigger capacity dishwasher once, than running 2 smaller loads. Moreover, the dishes/ pots need sufficient space for the water sprays to clean effectively.

🍋TYPES OF DISHWASHERS

While there might be many types of dishwashers available to choose from in the market, the three most common type of dishwashers are:

1. Free standing dishwasher:

✅Communicate with your ID your intention to have a dishwasher from the beginning of reno. Your ID would need to plan on the location, drainage system, power outlet and water supply for the dishwasher

✅It takes up floor space, hence you will need to sacrifice bottom cabinet space. Common size for a free standing dishwasher is 60cm(W) x 82cm(H) x 60cm(D)

✅Bigger capacity (12 place setting and above)

2. Built in dishwasher :

Similar to free standing but it is built as part of your kitchen unit. It will look like your bottom cabinet when installed.

3. Portable dishwasher :

✅If you have an existing kitchen and have no space planned for a dishwasher, you can consider a portable or tabletop/countertop dishwasher. As it names suggests, it is portable so can put it on your kitchen counter and plug and play

✅Require a manual drainage system. We bought a portable dishwasher for our parents. They need to fill it up with water manually every time they want to operate it. They will then put the drainage pipe into a bucket and throw it after each cycle. Alternatively you can get the drainage hose connected to the drainage hole through the provided pipe provided.

✅Usually it has smaller capacity compare to free standing hence it is not suitable for bigger family.

So choose which type is suitable for your household profile.
