These are my tips on how to save and be an auntie. Ask anybody in my life and they will tell you that I am the most, or one of the most frugal people they’ve met. Unfortunately I was a dumb child and I didn’t know about investing for a good portion of my life, so those are not the tips I’ll be sharing today. I was not born rich - because if I were, how would I have gained these auntie habits??
Also, I lived this way for a huge part of my life and now I don’t practice some of these frugal habits anymore because I feel like I would like to spend a little on myself. I was TOO frugal at some point and I’m glad that the person I am today is a little more willing to spend on herself!
Here are my auntie saving tips:
1. Take public transport over private transport
Avoid taking cabs if possible. Set out a little more time for public transport, but don’t think of it as wasted time! Bring a book, listen to a podcast, catch up on social media, whatever fulfils you!
2. Eat at affordable places
If caifan can cost $4/5 near a HDB block, don’t eat the caifan at MBS/any other exorbitantly-priced places.
3. Keep leftover food
Don’t throw away food if you can’t finish it! Pack it (preferably in environmentally-friendly items) and save it for another meal. Bonus: if you’re going for an event where you know it’s gonna be a buffet like a company party or a wedding, bring your own container because there will surely be leftovers. The hurdle to cross now is for you to not feel shy about taking the food!!
4. Avoid food delivery
Find a good staple to buy food from, or cook at home. Save yourself the delivery costs!!
4. Buy things from Carousell
If you see a new item you like, chances are there may be a brand new one on carousell that someone bought by accident or just wants to sell off. If you don’t mind it second-hand, even better!
5. Sell your stuff on Carousell
Similarly, if you have clutter in your home, sell that shit!! Get some cash and get back your living space!!
6. Borrow/swap clothes
Find a few friends of the same size/fashion and do wardrobe swaps! That way you also don’t get bored of your clothes as often!
I hope these tips helped! Let me know if you have any specific scenarios that you need an opinion on!
