stuff i didn’t know bout diabetes before I got it

These may be things you already know, but I just wanted to share my knowledge for those that may find it useful or learn something new today, and also to let you know that you’re not silly for not knowing these things until now. Better late than never!

The main thing that made me aware that I had diabetes was having an ongoing yeast infection, and that was probably due to consuming too much sugar (not the sole reason). So I also learnt how to prevent it and make sure it’s less likely to come back and haunt me again 😂.

But without further ado, here are the things I didn’t know about #diabetes before I got diagnosed with it:

1️⃣ You can get it even if you’re young

I got diagnosed a few months after circuit breaker in 2020, when I was 25. My family members didn’t even believe it because they thought I was too young to have diabetes. I did feel quite alone in the thought until I coincidentally made another friend that was the same age with the same diagnosis. We didn’t meet because of diabetes, but we eventually did write a song about it 😂

2️⃣ You can get it even if you’re not obese

I’m 159cm tall and hovering around 50-52kg. I know BMI isn’t a good metric for determining health, but mine’s 19.8 just for reference. It may be true that the majority of people who are diagnosed are plus-sized, but it doesn’t mean that non-plus-sized individuals are completely safe from it.

3️⃣ Not every diagnosis requires you to take medication/jab yourself with insulin

I’m lucky to have gotten my diagnosis at an early stage. The doctor did prescribe me Metformin in the beginning, but I had an allergic reaction to it. Upon telling the doctor, she said that I don’t absolutely need medication and that I can maintain a healthy lifestyle with a better diet and more regular exercise.

So whatever age you are, whatever BMI you are, please take care of yourself! And if you recently got diagnosed with diabetes, know that it’s not the end of the world and you can still live an enjoyable life :)
