When it comes to finding trustworthy skincare tips and tricks, the world wide web can be more like the wild wild west. From viral videos on TikTok, to tutorials from self-proclaimed specialists, it’s very easy to be seduced by skinfluencers in cyberspace. However, bad beauty advice and skincare trends are just as commonplace.
❌ Overloading your skin
When you use multiple products, you risk overloading your skin with active ingredients and chemicals that can cause irritation, dryness, and even breakouts. Using too many products can also make it difficult for your skin to absorb the beneficial ingredients, negating their effects. The less is always better!
❌ Slugging
Slugging is the fancy new term for the practice of applying a layer of ointment, often Vaseline, to the skin before sleeping, and keeping that layer on overnight. This practice has been going viral through social media and people do it to wake up with soft, buttery skin with no or fewer wrinkles. If you have normal to dry skin and aren’t prone to acne, there is no reason you shouldn’t try slugging. But I don’t recommend this for people with oily and acne prone skin.
❌ Using ice cubes directly on skin
If you apply ice to the face for a long period of time, the skin can be damaged. The skin may become itchy and red. Avoid using it on the skin directly, as it can cause broken capillaries, redness and inflammation. For the times when you really need it, wrap a towel around them before applying to your skin.
a ❌ Toothpaste on pimple
It may sound like an odd one, but there used to be method in this method’s madness. Toothpastes are packed full of astringents like alcohol menthol & hydrogen peroxide, which can trigger sores and even chemical burns. You will end up with an irritated skin barrier.
