I Got My Dog Registered As An ESA: how & why

I completely believe every dog is an emotional support animal. Most pets are! I cannot speak for other pets as I have only owned dogs. They help in ways they have no idea and they can bring so much comfort, trust, reliability, friendship, love, and more to you even without saying any words at all.

I am moving 18 hours away next week. I have lived in Wisconsin my entire life and this transition and change is going to be huge for me. I have had my fair share of mental health struggles but I have never seen a professional about it. I have always been afraid of both cost and I do not personally want to take medication.

I thought one step in the right direction could be me getting my dog certified as an emotional support animal. Not only is this validating for me and him but it gives him access and more opportunity to support me when I need.

I had a call with a therapist for the first time and only a few minutes in I had found myself in tears which I did not expect. Both talking about symptoms and the help Duncan provides me evoked tears. She quickly agreed that he is beneficial to my life and was happy to write me a letter and grant certification for him. I am feeling confident walking into my big move with this. It is super comforting knowing I can have him when needed and it is validating knowing she sees my struggles and attests they are real. It is easy to think you are just being dramatic.
