Crater Lake National Park could be considered a travel dupe the Lake Viti in the Askja Caldera in Iceland . Both Crater Lake and Askja offer unique volcanic formations, deep blue water formed in volcanic basins, breathtaking elevated views, and dramatic, barren landscapes that feel like a different planet.

🥾 Most hikes I did were a short or no hike at all. With the exception of Cleetwood cove that is the only official trail that takes you down to the lake. The trail is steep and strenuous due to its elevation without any much of a switchback.

📆 The park is open 24/7 year-round, but certain roads may be closed due to snow from October to June.

💰 The entrance fee is $30 per vehicle, but best deal is to get the AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL park pass which gives you unlimited access to all national parks within a full year.

🚪 There are 3 main entrances:

the North, West and South entrances. But the West entrance gives you the most panoramic and iconic views of the park.

🏕️ There are 2 campgrounds within the park:

Mazama Campground and Lost Creek Campground that require reservation .

🚗 Driving distance between top spots is typically 10-30 minutes apart, making it easy to hit multiple locations consecutively .

From Rim Village to Cleetwood Cove (one of the park’s top spots), the driving distance is around 11 miles, and most of the main points of interest are connected by Rim Drive.

This itinerary will give you plenty of time to enjoy each spot without feeling rushed. The key is to get an early start and spend time at each lookout and trail while driving the scenic Rim Drive around the lake
