It’s no secret one of my favorite magical elements to work with is water. Maybe it’s the many water placements in my natal chart ( ♋️ cancer sun and moon to name a few) or the fact that our bodies are made of over 70% of water. For me, water has one of the biggest impact on my spiritual practice - especially the ocean! 🌊 🐚 🪄

There is so much magic within the ocean, the waves, the energy, sea spirits and natural treasures you can find. Sea magic to me is one of the most powerful energies you can work with.

🏝️ Living on the east coast I have a lot of access to beautiful beaches but from my home we are nearly two hours away from the closest one. If you are a landlocked witch far away from the ocean or really any large body of water, you can always bring in the energy to your home with a few items. My craving for being near the ocean is how my sea altar was born! I’ll always do something small at the beach like pick up trash or return items (like shells) I’m not using anymore - it’s always good practice to give something if you take something. I always ask the sea spirits if it’s ok to take an item or help me manifest a specific item I’m looking for (you can use divination to ask as well). Here’s some ideas and pieces from my personal altar that hopefully inspire you to add the sea energy in your practice.

1. Moon water/salt water: of course this one is obvious a staple you’ll need to work with is water! I often place my moon water here as the ocean and moon have a strong connection. You could also collect sea water or add sea salt to your moon water. You could also just use regular water - I always use filtered water. I thrifted this little clear bottle, when making moon water I like to make sure I’m using a clear jar. Water will be a staple in your practice as you can use it for anointing, spell work, offerings etc. 🌊

2. Ocean home decor: this one is tricky because I’m a HUGE thrifter. However when it comes to home decor I try very hard to find organically sourced pieces but I do think it’s ok for them to be man made like this coral piece I found at Goodwill. Just having items on an altar that remind you of the ocean can help bring in that energy. 🪸

3. Small pieces of crystals/stones: in any spell work or ritual I love using any naturally occurring items I’ve found from beach trips. A few of my favorites are any beautiful stones I’ve picked up. I have a beautiful piece of driftwood I found that I use to direct energy (a wand!) Some items I’ve purchased abroad like this hagstone sourced from the shores of Ireland (amazing for spiritual protection). Other items I love using are crystals like aquamarine and larimar. These are great for offerings, grids or just to be placed on your altar for their beauty and energy.

4. Small jars or trinket boxes: I have many trinket jars or shell boxes I’ve thrifted that have reminded me of the ocean. I have this beautiful deep blue cork jar that I use a lot in my work. Color magic can play a huge role in any of your workings so finding any colors that remind of you the ocean can be extremely powerful! This jar usually comes with me to hold tiny items i find on the beach like sand or mini shells, also amazing staples in my practice!

5. Sea shells: also painfully obvious! Large, small or even shell pieces are amazing for protection work. I have a beloved resin crystal shell I purchased shown here but any shell pieces you can add would be good! Shells are amazing for holding items, item enchantments, offerings, holding herbs or burning incense. I have many I use in my practice for protection purposes and divination. Don’t skip out on the power of shells. 🐚 🏖️

6. Books: any books really are going to be an added guide in your practice. Something like a picture book of beautiful oceans or a local sea shell glossary like the one I thrifted here. There’s many books on sea witchcraft but even your own grimoire would be fine! 📚

There’s so much more I could touch upon this topic? Let me know if you want a part 2! These are just a few items and ideas I have so you could use to bring in the oceans energy 🥰. 💙 🌊 🪄

Let me know down in the comments if you are a siren/mermaid fan and too love the oceans energy. What do you do in your practice or home to work with the ocean?? Do you work with lakes, ponds, just something simple like a ritual bath??
