What Happens During Your Baby’s 1st Dr Appointment

The first year of your baby’s life has quite a few appointments and they start right away!

Within 3-5 days of your baby being born, you’ll most likely have your first pediatrician appointment. This appointment, like many others, is filled with paperwork, discussion and a physical exam of your baby.

The first appointment will probably have more paperwork and more discussion.

Your pediatrician may ask about your baby’s routine, feeding schedule, how many wet and dirty diapers they’ve been having per day and how to care for the umbilical cord.

They may review your pregnancy and delivery and your baby’s growth chart.

They’ll also go over safety measures such as the car seat, crib and sleep safety.

At any point, bring up any questions you have! For new moms especially, you may have lots of questions and bows the perfect time to ask! I am constantly asking my pediatrician questions and discussing what my boys are doing. Then I ask if I’m handling each situation right. Make sure you have a pediatrician you feel comfortable with and can confide in when you have questions.

After the paperwork and discussions, they’ll administer a head-to-toe examination on your baby. They’ll gather their weight, height and head measurements and review their growth chart.

At the end of the appointment, they’ll let you know what type of shots or vaccines they recommend. You will need to approve the shots, and then they will administer them.

At the end of your appointment, you’ll set up your next appointment.

Remember you are your baby’s advocate, you are in charge, so speak up if you are ever uncomfortable!
