My twin babies are slowly growing into toddlers! I work from home and needed to figure out some sort of ‘plan’ for each day. Luckily, my job is only really busy for part of the month and is task oriented rather than project and deadline oriented. So with some hard work and long days ahead, I fully intend on watching my kids while working from home until they go to school.

So how will I do this? Here is my three step plan!

1. Keep them in one room or area

Use baby gates to keep them in an area such as the living room or kitchen or even both. Make sure these rooms are 100% baby/toddler proof!! This way when you do have to complete a task, you can be more at ease knowing they can’t get into anything that can hurt them!

2. Use your lunch break as ‘outside’ time

Once your toddler can eat pretty well on their own, you can choose to work (right next to them) while their eating so your lunch break can be free to play! It’s crucial to get outside with your toddler so they can burn off some energy and also breathe in the fresh air. If you have a park nearby, or a backyard, let them run around, play in a sandbox or go on the swings or just sit outside! Having your toddler burn off some energy will help your afternoon go much smoother!

3. Keep them on a schedule

Setting up a schedule will help keep them preoccupied during the day so you can sneak in time to get your work tasks done. This schedule can include eating times, nap times, outside time, arts and crafts, a learning activity, etc.

Scheduling some independent play time or an hour or so of educational screentime can also help you focus and get some work done!

Schedules will help you and give you time to get your work done. It can also be beneficial to your toddler, keeping them busy and even learning throughout the day. Kids thrive on structure!

I admit working from home with toddlers is really hard and may not even be possible for some. If you have a job that requires a lot of phone calls or virtual meetings, it may not work at all. But if you have a job that’s more flexible, and you prep ahead of time, it is possible to do!
