Sexy Old Hollywood: Wings (1927)

I think when many people think of “Old Hollywood” they’re imagining a buttoned up, Ken doll sort of version. No sex! No adultery! No nudity! But what that tells me is that they probably haven’t been introduced to pre-code films, aka films made between 1929ish-1934 before the “Hays Code” censorship guidelines fully took effect. This era of filmmaking took on subject matter like divorce, adultery, interracial romances, homosexuality, and sexual freedom for women.

In my series on Insta (@HollywoodGenes), Sexy Old Hollywood in Less than 60 Seconds, I’ll be showcasing a sexy film or star that defies the Old Hollywood as a Rockwellian utopia idea. Typically this will be a pre-code film, but not always!

In honor of #pridemonth I’m talking about Wings (1927), a silent romantic action film that was the first film to win the Best Picture Academy Award…and also was the first film to feature a same sex kiss. Have you seen Wings?
