You May Already Know Some Norwegian!

I was surprised to find out that there are hundreds of words in the English and Norwegian language that sound very similar!

English and Norwegian have many cognates - words in different languages that stem from the same ancestral language and look and/or sound very similar to one another.

There is also one form of each verb per tense and the word order is similar to English (“can you help me?” translates to “Kan du hjelpe meg?”).

This is one of my favorite things about languages – that unless you actually take the time to research the background of certain languages and get curious about them then you would never know that you can probably translate hundreds of words in other languages!

Keep in mind that Norwegian is mostly only spoken in Norway by 4.4 million people – so its benefits outside of Norway aren’t exactly many but if it is a language you are passionate about then go for it!
