Regardless of which language you are learning, there are key phrases that will help especially when traveling and meeting locals!

Keep in mind that traveling to a foreign country and not learning basic greetings and basic questions can come off a bit insensitive. Remember that you should not expect locals of that country to speak YOUR language.

In Italy, the most common way to greet someone (regardless of who they are) is – Ciao! If you are greeting someone in the morning, you are welcome to say – Buongiorno! Ciao is also conveniently used to say goodbye, which makes it easier for any learner!

Please and thank you are non-negotiables to learn – this will help you when asking for directions, ordering a coffee, shopping, chatting, etc. Note that the “e” at the end of these words is not pronounced like the English “e” but rather – “eh”.

Dove (pronounced with the same “eh” in Grazie), means where. However Dov'è – is used when you are asking where something is. Dov'è il treno? Where is the train.

Quanto will come in handy when inquiring about the amount or price of something – Fra quanto tempo? In how long? Quanto costa? How much does it cost?

Finally, when asking about timing you should use quando – when? quand'è il prossimo treno? When is the next train?

Keep these handy for your nextr trip to Italy!

Bisous,

Anaïs
