Traveling to a new country where you do not speak the language can be an overwhelming experience – how will you get around? How do you order food? How do you ask for the nearest bathroom?

Regardless of your destination, there are some key phrases that you should familiarize yourself with: greetings, asking for directions, discussing price, and expressing care and respect.

If you have a trip planned to a French-speaking country, practice the following phrases:

1. Bonjour (Hello)

Just like you would greet someone you are just seeing or meeting for the first time back at home, you should always start your interaction with a [bonjour!] when speaking French.

This lets your presence be known and shows others that you in turn acknowledge them.

2. Où se trouve...(Where is [something] found…?)

At some point you may have to ask for directions or for the location of something. If you have already mastered the singular/plural in French then you can ask “où est le train?” (where is the train?) or “où sont les toilettes?” (where is the restroom?).

However, “où se trouve...” will work in most situations to ask where (something) can be found.

3. Je voudrais...(I would like)

Not to be confused with “je veux” which can be taken more harshly and demanding since it translates to: I want. Whereas “je voudrais” is a polite way of requesting something and expresses a desire or wish of yours.

4. Ça coûte combien...?

If you happen to be traveling to Paris, the chances of you NOT purchasing something may be low. Therefore, knowing how to confirm the cost of an item is crucial.

5. Merci!

Whether thanking the barista for that yummy coffee or thanking a stranger on the street for helpful directions, always show gratitude and appreciation. A simple “merci!” goes a long way!

Bisous,

Anaïs
