5 Tips for New Dog Parents

The day you bring your pup home is always so exciting, and since spring often seems to be a popular time for new puppies and gotcha days, thought it would be the perfect timing to share some puppy tips that worked well for us!

1. Invest in a playpen for managed freedom: A playpen can be a lifesaver when you need to step away or focus on tasks. It offers a safe space for your pup to roam and play while preventing them from getting into mischief and develop bad habits (ie. chewing furniture, shoes, etc).

2. Get a puppy bag and bring them everywhere! Socialization is crucial for a well-adjusted dog. Consider brining your pup everywhere you can safely do so, especially in the early stages when they don't have all their vaccines yet. A comfortable dog carrier or bag allows you to introduce them to various environments, people, and experiences while keeping them secure.

3. Practice calm and relaxed behaviors: Dogs thrive on companionship, but they also need to learn to relax independently and not be stimulated all the time. Set aside 10-15 minutes a day to simply sit with your pup outside, allowing them to take in their environment and relax/settle without constant interaction. This practice helps promote calm behavior and overexcitement.

4. Prioritize safe socialization: Introduce your pup to other dogs in controlled environments with animals you trust. We brought Capri to playdates with our friend's dogs. Positive interactions at a young age lay the foundation for health social skills and confidence in your pup.

5. PLAY TOGETHER! Play is essential for your pup's physical and mental well-being and is so crucial for building your bond. Set aside time each day to just simply play and be goofy together.
