READ THIS BEFORE YOU DYE YOUR HAIR BY YOURSELF ‼️

hellos guys as yall can see from the cover pic i dye my hair a lot… and in fact almost everything you see (all except the grey) was done by myself! in case you’re on a budget and wanna save some cash by diy-ing your own hair, i’ve collated a list of things you should prepare before you start and what you can expect after! most importantly, this post also contains what you should NOT be doing based on my past mistakes… (and trust me they’re a lot) :p

DOs:

1. prepare gloves, especially if you’re using bleach! you want NONE of that on your hands. dye too unless you want stained nails and fingers :p

2. prepare varying sizes of aluminium foil strips beforehand to wrap your hair in while dyeing to help it process better

3. always follow the instructions on the instruction sheet on how long to leave the dye in your hair. even though it might seem tempting, don’t leave the dye in longer than the recommended duration! leaving it longer won’t make the dye last longer, it will only damage your hair more… even more so if you’re using bleach!! super damaging!!

4. wear an old shirt that you don’t mind throwing. this way, in case the hair dye stains cannot be washed off, you will feel less heart pain having to throw it xD. alternatively, you can wear a dark coloured shirt (black/grey/blue) or cover your shoulders with plastic! but i was lazy so i just wore an old shirt hehe

5. always buy more dye than you think you will need. this is to ensure that you aren’t left with half dyed hair and so you won’t have to be stingy with the dye in the process. not putting enough dye in your hair could also result in your hair colour being diluted or unevenly coloured so you wanna make sure that you have enough!

6. always consider your current hair colour before dyeing! most of the time, don’t trust the colour that you see on the box because those are mostly shown with level 10 hair (which is platinum blonde, almost white). us asians usually have black/dark brown hair that is super hard to dye without bleaching first so take note of that! even after bleaching, there will be yellowish or orange tones in your hair so there might be a slight discolouration after dyeing (colour won’t look exactly the same but the lighter your hair is the better your chances).

7. for aftercare, DO invest in a good hair mask like olaplex that will help your hair to recover after all that harsh chemicals. also buy colour safe shampoo and conditioner so that the dye will last longer!

8. don’t wash your hair for a day (or more) before bleaching :p i know its super gross but apparently the oil helps to protect your scalp from the bleach. for me, i’m the kind of person who cannot stand not washing my hair so i skipped this step.. and my scalp was burning SO freaking badly i thought my hair was gonna drop off 😭😭

DON’Ts:

1. pls don’t bleach your roots first like what i did omg… you will end up getting hot roots which is when your hair closest to your scalp comes out lighter than the rest of your hair. this happens because the heat from your scalp makes the bleach process faster = lighten quicker so beware! go from bottom up!

2. don’t leave the bleach in your hair for too long!!! this may happen because you take too long to bleach your hair or because you want your hair to turn out lighter. i took too long and all my hair started falling out (pic2 that’s not even half of it 💀) which was so terrifying guys omg. if you know that it’s your first time and you might take awhile, always get someone to help you to quicken the process!

3. I KNOW YALLS NOT GONNA LISTEN but please don’t bleach more than once in a single day… it’s gonna make your hair so sososos dry and damaged you’re gonna hate it so much 😨 instead, wait for 1-2 months before bleaching again to give your hair time to recover!

4. don’t get fresh ear piercings if you know you’re gonna dye your hair soon! this is because you’re gonna need to cover your ears when dyeing ur hair and its gonna hurt like shit because of the new piercings. also dye might get into it and cause an infection which you really wanna avoid!

5. pls don’t buy light coloured dye like pink or beige and dye it over your virgin black hair then say the dye doesn’t work when the colour doesn’t show up… ofc it won’t work just like how pink paint wont show up over black paint right??! (refer to point 6 in ‘DOs’) manage expectations guys!!!
