Don't get the Tourist Octopus Card!

Just came back from a short trip to Hong Kong and I would like to share more about the rental Octopus Card!

🐙 About the card

- Many shops in HK don't accept credit cards, but often accepted Octopus Cards. This included taxis too! Except that one time we took an older taxi and he only accepted cash. Cash is still important in Hong Kong!

- Both cards are able to refund the remaining stored value. Hence, I was comparing the net costs of using/renting both cards

💳 Getting the card

- We got it from the MTR counter at the arrival hall, also accommodating to the airport railway enquiries. The staff also mentioned that you can get it from any MTR stations as well.

- Similar to refunding the remainder of the tourist card, the staff mentioned that you can return the rental card at any MTR station too!

💬 Thoughts

For context, I don't have any concrete plans of visiting Hong Kong within the next 3 years (Octopus cards have a max 3 year inactivity) and opted for the rental card instead. I brought my parents on this trip and they missed the elderly fare ever so slightly, by a few years, but the rental card will useful if you are bringing your elderly parents along! It's also so cute that you can top up the card for them and they can make their own purchases. 🤭

I mentioned that I didn't have any plans to visit Hong Kong again in the near future but I had such a fun time during this trip??? I can actually forsee myself visiting again HAHAHA. But that's for another online yapping session.
