Advice on buying jersey for boyfriend?

So I want to get my boyfriend a jets jersey for christmas.

I was considering getting him a custom jersey with his last name on it. Is that a good idea since he could wear it forever? And if so, can I choose any number or would it be bad if the number already belonged to someone? I was considering #9 .

Otherwise, whose jersey would you suggest getting him? Since this will be his only jersey, I want it to be someone's he could always wear.
