Hi Zesties 🍋,

I'm sure many of you understand the pain of project season. Tensions are high, throw in a slacker in the mix and sparks fly 💥

After working with a senior, I saw how well they handled slackers which inspired me to make this post so you can learn too! Here are 3 things they did that made a world of difference:

📌 Speak to them privately

It is important to give people a chance to explain themselves before you start making assumptions. Talk to the slacker privately and find out why they are not contributing.

They may be struggling with the material 📖 , they may have a time management issue 🕰️, or they may simply be lazy 🛌 . Once you know the reason, you can start to address the issue.

You could say something like, "Hey [name], I've noticed that you haven't been contributing much to the project. Is everything okay? Is there anything I can do to help?"

📌 Break down tasks further

This will help to keep everyone on track and ensure that progress is being made. 🏃‍♀️ If you have a large project, break it down into smaller, more manageable tasks. This will make it easier for the slacker to get started and to stay on top of their work.

You can create an Excel sheet with the following columns:

👉 Study week

👉 Date

👉 Task

👉 Person in charge

👉 Status (Completed, In Progress, Not Started)

👉 Mini-deadline

📌 Don't take it personally

It is easy to get frustrated when you're working with a slacker, but it is important to stay professional and not take it personally. Remember that the slacker's behavior is not a reflection of you or your work.

👉 Explain to the slacker if this continues, the team will have to mark them down.

👉 Keep records by working on cloud-based platforms (e.g., Google Drive) and monitor their behavior.

👉 Ask your professor for advice as a team. Do not wait until after the project to let them know. I have heard stories where teams did not speak up early, and professors refused to give chances or allow them to mark the team member down.

I hope these tips help you to deal with slackers in group projects. Remember to stay calm, professional, and focused on the end goal. Don't let them ruin your day! 🧘‍♀️

Zestin' Out,

Melly 🐥
