Hey zesties! 💖 Today, I want to share a detailed account of my entire LASIK process with all of you who have been considering or are currently thinking about getting LASIK. Believe me, I understand the longing for perfect eyesight and the desire to wake up in the morning without fumbling for glasses. I've been dependent on glasses since I was 7 years old, with a degree of around 500. Without my specs, I'm practically blind. Initially, I was hesitant about LASIK because the idea of someone touching my eyes and a laser getting so close to them didn't sit well with me. However, during my internship, wearing contacts every day made my eyes dry, to the point where the veins in my eyes turned red. I even had a scare with an eye infection due to my contacts. That's when I seriously started considering LASIK.

Finally, based on a friend's recommendation, I decided to visit Eye Surgeons @ Novena and consult with Dr. Por Yong Ming. The registration process was quick, and I received a queue number to see him. They began by testing my eyes with an air pressure puff test and an eye chart examination. Next, I went to a dark room where they used a circular machine to measure my cornea thickness. The results showed that my corneas were actually thicker than average, making me a suitable candidate for any type of eye surgery. Since I'm not particularly sporty or outdoorsy, I opted for LASIK, where a flap is created on the cornea. In cases where the cornea is too thin, ICL (Implantable Collamer Lens) is usually recommended. For those who love sports or engage in contact sports, PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy) is a suitable option, although the recovery time is slightly longer as the entire flap is lasered off to minimize the risk of the flap reopening.

Once I made my decision, I was given a surgery date. Dr. Por was incredibly kind and took the time to explain the entire process to me. I underwent LASIK surgery on May 18th at 3 PM. I had to wear a hospital gown and a hair net, so remember to dress warmly on the day of the surgery as the hospital room was quite cold. The whole procedure was relatively quick, but the numbing process took some time. The nurses were amazing, providing me with comfort and reassurance. While I wasn't panicking, I was genuinely excited to finally achieve 20/20 vision. It took around 30 minutes for them to apply the numbing drops and ensure that my eyes were fully numb before taking me to a room to create the flap, which would later be lasered. The flap creation was done using a machine, and Dr. Por performed the procedure while explaining each step. Although he was gentle, the suction sensation was quite peculiar. Essentially, when the suction pressure is applied to your eyeball, your vision blacks out momentarily. However, it only lasts for about 10 seconds, and the staff will count down for you. This process was repeated on the other eye before I returned to the waiting area. At this point, my vision became even blurrier due to the air bubbles trapped under the lifted flap, so they had to wait for the air bubbles to dissipate before proceeding with the surgery.

After approximately 30 minutes, they informed me that I could enter the surgery room. I lay flat on the chair, and once again, Dr. Por explained the process, informing me that he would lift the flap to perform the laser treatment and then place clear bandage contacts over the eyes. This part of the process felt a bit longer, maybe around 10 minutes. Throughout, all I had to do was focus on the green light while the laser did its job. There was a peculiar smell, almost like a barbecue, but it wasn't too intimidating. To distract myself, I hummed a tune. Dr. Por held my head to prevent sudden movements, but don't worry, the machine is equipped with eye-tracking technology, so if you move out of range, the laser immediately stops.

After the surgery, I didn't feel anything except for a slight sensation, as if there was a speck of dust in my eye. I kept my eyes closed for a while. Shortly after, the nurse provided me with post-surgery care instructions and shared her own experience of having undergone the same surgery. She now has perfect 20/20 vision! I was thrilled to see the world through my new eyes, even though my vision was initially hazy, like things were clear but not quite. However, this was only a few minutes after the surgery. Dr. Por assured me that the biggest difference would be noticeable the next day, so I should use this day to rest and recover. I was given antibiotic drops, drops for eye pressure as well as lubricating drops 💊

That's the gist of the whole procedure! I'll share more about the healing process in my next post. The total cost of my LASIK surgery was $4,000, not including consultation fees after the surgery.
