I failed my first gestational diabetes test so I had to come back to take the 3 hour test today. Here are all the ins and outs of the test and what to expect.

You do have to go in fasted for this test. I was instructed to be at least 8-10 hours fasted prior to testing. This includes coffee unfortunately 🥲 The only thing I could have was water. Upon arriving the lab technician brought me back to draw my blood fasted. Once they were done drawing blood I had to drink the glucose drink. I had 5 minutes to get it down. There is a difference in the 1 hr glucose drink vs the 3 hr drink. The 1hr drink contains 50 grams of glucose while there are 100 grams of glucose are used in the 3-hour drink.

Once I finished the glucose drink my time started. I had to wait one hour before having my blood drawn again. After the first hour the lab tech called me back a second time to draw another vile of blood. I returned to the waiting room again and waited another hour. After hour two passed I had blood drawn a third time and then returned to the waiting area. Finally after the third hour passed I had blood work done one final time then I was able to leave.

I would HIGHLY recommend bringing some sort of protein snack (I brought a protein shake) to have after testing so complete. I felt so shaky and very light headed. I ended up sitting in my car for a few minutes after drinking my protein shake and made sure I was feeling good enough to drive home. I was told I should get my test results the same day but so far I’ve heard nothing. I’ll give you guys a full update tomorrow when I hear back from the lab!
