This morning, I had a conversation with an aunty selling breakfast by the roadside that really made me reflect.

As I ordered, I noticed how old she looked and casually asked, “Why are you still working at your age?”

Her answer? “I have to work to support my well-being.”

Curious, I asked about her kids. She told me she has 3, but they all have their own families now and… well, they’ve all left her behind. Despite raising them with love and care, she’s on her own now.

I walked away, but something stayed with me. I couldn’t stop thinking: We can’t blame the kids. They are not and should not be our retirement plan, no matter what past generations believed.

The aunty isn’t to blame either—she’s just living in a reality shaped by the expectations of her time. And sadly, many still live by these outdated ideas.
