You have probably heard of Gua Sha before - but do you know what it actually is and how it works? Let me explain ✨
What is it?
• Gua Sha is a practice from the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)
• it uses a tool (usually a stone) to massage/lightly scrape skin
• it helps promote blood flow & lymphatic drainage and is said to reduce pain
• it de-puffs the face & smoothens fine lines and wrinkles
What you need:
• Gua Sha stone
- I prefer Jade, but some people like rose quartz or other stones
• Moisturizer
- moisturizer protects your skin from friction
- alternatively, you can use face balm or face oil
- I like using moisturizer first and then adding face balm on top
How to Massage:
• always massage towards your temples or, in case of your forehead, upward towards your hairline
• when massaging the neck, move towards lymph nodes (under jawline)
• moving in the direction of lymphatic flow facilitates the process of lymphatic drainage
• apply gentle pressure and use a supporting hand or fingers
Jaw:
• use the double-notched side - it fits perfectly!
• massage from your chin up to your ears/temples
• this movement helps relax tense muscles. I clench my teeth at night, so my jaw is super tight. I love the relief from Gua Sha!
• using a supporting hand can help smoothen your skin without too much pressure
Cheeks:
• use the long side
• massage from your mouth to your ears/temples
• wiggle with gentle pressure when you reached your ears to stimulate lymphatic drainage
Under Eyes:
• use the bigger notch
• massage from your nose towards your temples
• place two fingers on the bridge of your nose for support
Eyebrows:
• use the double-notched side
• keep the supporting fingers on your nose
• close your eyes to avoid injury
• gently massage your brow bone and move outward
Forehead:
• use the long, concave side
• place two fingers between your eyebrows
• massage towards your hairline
• this is great for fine lines and creases on your forehead. I have pretty deep lines there unfortunately, but I feel like massaging upwards smoothens the skin a little
This is pretty much it! There’s a few different variations and so many tutorials out there, but I’d say it’s just learning by doing. See what feels good and brings you results ✨
