First Month of Dental School

So I finally started dental school at WLHSDM in El Paso!!

I actually started school at the beginning of July, but the first 3 weeks were used to get us used to the El Paso community. The 3 week immersion included reviewing conversational Spanish, volunteering, and experiencing the culture of the area.

We have now finally completed immersion + one month of dental school. We take exams every friday and the content of the exam is only based on what is learned that week. So, my roommate and I usually start studying on mondays to prepare. To pass exams, you have to make at least an 80%, and luckily we have passed all of our exams for the first month.

As for sim lab, we started practicing on tiles first so we can get used to the handpiece and moved to working on plastic teeth in the mouth. They require us to place a rubber dam before prepping which was REALLY HARD to get the hang of. I think I ripped through 7 rubber dams on the first day before I actually got one to stay. We are currently working on class I restorations and will begin class V’s later this week. This friday we will take an “OSPE” which is where we have 1 hour to prep a #30 and 1 hour to restore a pre-prepped #31 using optibond composite.
