Decisions decisions!! How to choose my BTO unit?🤔🏠

First up, congrats if you managed to get a queue number in the hdb BTO exercise! 🥳

We were fortunate to get a queue number in our 2nd try of BTO application and we got a middle-ish queue number which means our selection options were like cut by half. To plan our BTO unit selection, we listed down our priorities/ nice-to-haves/ important-to-have.

Our priorities and reasons why:

1. Corner unit (privacy)

- like privacy from neighbours

- not many neighbours passing by our home

- minimise noise outside the house

2. High floor but not the top floor

- MINIMISE noise pollution from ground level

- not top floor as it’ll be super hot at all angles 😅

- we lived in top floor previously and it was rly hot & ceiling may face leakage after years

- water pressure more inconsistent at the top

3. No direct west sun

- no direct heat so that it won’t be so warm especially in the afternoon

- we lived in a west sun facing home before and the heat is rly too much for us

- some sun is still okay for natural light, just not direct heat to all rooms

4. Away from trash chute area

- NOT NEAR INSECTS!!

- prevent having chances of insects creeping into the home

- avoid being near high human traffic area

- less noise from trash disposal etc

5. Not road facing

- minimise noise pollution by vehicles especially during peak hours

- minimise air pollution too as we don’t get the air emitted by vehicles

These were our priorities in choosing our unit!

Did we get our first choice unit? No 🤨

When we saw our choice units being taken up 1 by 1, imagine how anxious we felt when we didn’t know if we had good options left for us. ☹️

However, following our pre-set priorities, we then restarted our lookout of remaining units and were happy to still find units that surprisingly actually fit a majority of our priorities — just that we didn’t select them from the beginning.

At the end, there’s no perfect unit and there’re so many considerations to factor in. Even the most seemingly perfect unit/ top unit choice will have its cons — like is it near amenities? transport? how about the layout of the unit?

sooo many considerations but hope that by sharing our thought processes, it also gives some additional insight to all who are choosing your BTO unit! ☺️
