Museums of NYC: The New York Transit Museum

The New York Transit Museum is located in an old subway station in Downtown Brooklyn. There are three working subway stops nearby - Jay Street-MetroTech, Hoyt-Schermerhorn, and Borough Hall - so it’s easy to get to by train!

The museum begins with an exhibit about the workers and working conditions while the subway was being built. It goes on to show how the subway has changed in every aspect since it’s inception - from maps and the way we pay for the subway to the turnstiles and signage.

My favorite part was the lower level which has a full subway station’s worth of old train cars that you can walk through and sit in. I could feel the history jumping off the seats!

I spent just over an hour here and would recommend budgeting 1-2 hours to visit this museum. This is kid friendly with lots of opportunities for kids to climb around on the old train cars and sit in old buses. For the price, this is absolutely worth the visit!

Note that air conditioning is only present in part of the museum - it is an old subway station after all! Because of that, I wouldn’t recommend visiting on an especially hot day.
