How I read my Bible as a beginner.

I am a pastor’s kid and I struggle to read the Bible.

To some of you this may be shocking.

I know the basic Bible stories. I know that Jesus died for my sins. I know to love God and love my neighbor.

But that is the extent of my Bible knowledge.

For a long time I was ashamed of it. As a pastor’s kid, I am expected to know everything about the Bible. I am supposed to read the Bible everyday.

And I felt like I failed …

I never met those expectations.

It had been a while since I picked up my Bible to just read it.

The start of April, I decided enough was enough and I wanted to read my Bible. I want to grow in my relationship with God🌼

So as a pastor’s kid and a beginner Bible reader, here is how I read my Bible daily.

🍂 I try to read before doing anything else in the morning. I use the Bible app from Life.Church and I follow The Bible Recap plan.

🍂 I listen to the audio of someone reading the Bible. It helps me to understand what I am reading when I hear it out loud. But do what works best for you!

🍂 As I read, I highlight verses in my physical Bible that stick out to me. And no. My Bible is not pretty and does not have doodles. Not that it is wrong! I tried it, but I realized I was putting so much pressure into making it perfect. When I am reading, my focus should be solely on the Bible.

🍂 I listen to the accompanying podcast and take notes and write down my thoughts. Tara Leigh Cobble does a great job breaking down the day’s passages.

Now this is just one way to read the Bible. For right now, this works for me. But it may not work for you. And that’s okay!

If you miss a day, don’t beat yourself up!! Just keep going.
