❥ Akaka Falls

-0.4mi loop

-$5 for parking

-Open til 6pm

-Kolekole stream runs through the valley and feeds Akaka falls. It is two and half times higher then Niagara Falls in NY where we’re from! I was in awe of the tropical rainforest trail and the sheer raw beauty of the waterfalls as it cascades down the cliffs. The mist and the fresh air was serene and so peaceful. 10/10 ✨

❥ Waipi’o Valley

-Drive down is closed

-1.5mi hike down (30-45min) but very steep coming back uphill (1-1.5hr)

-Overlook may only be open

-Look for tours you can book for a guarantee to get down there to the black sand beach.

- Waipi'o Valley is considered sacred by the Native Hawaiian people because of its cultural, historical, and spiritual significance. It is believed to be the dwelling place of ancestral spirits and has been a site for important ceremonies and rituals for generations back. The valley's natural beauty and its connection to Hawaiian mythology make it a special and sacred place.

-Free entry

-Rainbow falls is another waterfall must see when visiting Hilo area. Beautiful view to take in usually early mornings you will almost always see a rainbow. Easy accessibility to waterfall. Picnic tables around if you want to get lunch from a food truck nearby. Perfect quick stop for an amazing view. 10/10✨

❥ Drive the coast and explore roads we ended up seeing so many hidden gems on the way. Definitely worth it 🤩
