Back in March, the news of a TikTok ban started to circulate, and I recognized that my feelings were not negative about the possibility. I realized that I was secretly hoping that they would ban it so I would stop being addicted to it. My connection and attachment to it, however, stopped me from deleting it before. TikTok had been with me since May 2017. I was in 4th grade when I first got it. TikTok was with me for a lot of the most formative years of my life, and during the pandemic. I felt as though it was a part of me. But it was also with me during the dark parts of those years, and I honestly feel like it pulled me deeper into depression because it gave me a space where I could just rot in bed all day and scroll, scroll scroll. TikTok also fed a lot into my hyperfixations because I would have my saved edits that I’d scroll through every so often. But my mental health was getting worse and worse, and I would take it out on the people I love and I hated that. With the news of the possible TikTok ban, however, I saw a light at the end of the tunnel. I saw a way to detox and work on getting better. So one day I saved all of my videos (which was a pain) and deleted my account. It took a few days to figure out what to do with myself, but after that I felt better. Of course, all of my problems weren’t solved, but making that effort to try and get better helped me tremendously. Thank you for listening and if you’re in this situation, I hope my words can help you find your peace too 🫶🏽
