Wondering what to eat at Namdaemun market? Here are some of the food we tried!

1. Kalguksu alley

Hidden behind a plastic sheet covered door is a short alley lined with kalguksu stores. Brace yourself for store owners who, in typical market fashion, zealously invite you to sit. Since most sell similar items, just take your pick. There’s a set menu which includes Kalguksu (knife cut noodle), Naengmyeon (cold noodles), Bibimbab, soup and kimchi for around 8000 krw. In my opinion, pretty worth it and you get to clear 3 must-try Korean dishes! It's a nice hearty meal but quite carbs heavy.

Directions: Take Hoehyeon station exit 5, make a right into the market, walk around 40 m. Beside a clothing store is a plastic sheet covered door which leads into the alley.

2. Vegetable Hotteok

After exiting the alley, walk to the end of the street to find a Hotteok stand. They have a great honey Hotteok, but you’re really here for the vegetable one. We felt it was special since we didn't see this elsewhere. The hotteok is filled with chopped vegetables and glass noodles. Before serving the lady coats it with their special sauce that is salty and savory.

3. Dumplings and Jjimbang

Lastly, near the alley’s entrance is a place called 가메골 손 왕만두. Unfortunately, did not snap a photo of the store, but the steaming hot dumplings outside is hard to miss. They sell these plump stuffed kimchi or meat dumplings, and also a soft steam bread (jjimbang) filled with sweet red beans.

Finally, don’t forget to check out the Sungnyemun Gate! Fyi, there is a guard performance that happens twice a day.

Happy Eating!
