Travel tips and guide to Lake Como

How to get there?

Take a train from Milan Centrale to Varenna-Esino, I booked my tickets from trainline which cost 14.65€ return trip. The journey takes around 1 hour one way and can be very crowded with no space for sitting throughout the journey.

Tip: The earlier you arrive, the more chances you have of getting seats.

Where to stay?

The most common areas to stay in Lake Como are Bellagio, Varenna, Como and Tremezzo. We decided to stay in Varenna and it is centrally located on Lake Como which makes it really accessible to other towns and is less touristy than other places such as Bellagio.

How to get around Lake Como?

Ferry! There are many ferry running the entire day between each towns/villages and you can easily book the tickets from the ticket booth in each town. We ran into some problems with the Ferry as it arrived an hour late, but I’m not sure if this is a common occurrence there. Each way costs 4.6€.

1. Walk around the main streets of Varenna. Along the water and pass by the “Lover’s walk”. There are many restaurants located in that area and many people sitting by the water having a picnic.

2. Villa Monastero (located in Varenna)

4. Day trip out to Bellagio

5. Villa Balbianello (movie scenes from Star Wars and Casino Royale)

6. Head to II Cavatappi in Varenna for good pasta
