okay so itโs been a hot minute since returning from our Europe trip and Iโve been meaning to share our top experiences that had us thinking we were indefinitely cursed by someone back home!
jk but no amount of salt throwing/egg cleansing/thoughts and prayers could have prepared us for this:
1. THE PLANEGATE SAGA ๐ฅฒ
it all began when one person got an email during the last day of classes, notifying them that their โplane had landed safely yesterdayโ. Now they thought this was a mistake, and swore that they booked a flight out of glasgow on the correct date/time- unaware that there were more emails stating that their initial flight had been delayed and eventually rescheduled to a day earlier than the expected time!
We planned to travel in a group of 6, but had split the group onto separate flights because we had issues booking together. So therefore while 3 of us had a smooth journey towards Amsterdam with everything going to plan, the other 3 had to stay behind in glasgow for about 3D2N, essentially cutting their trip short and separating us for a while :(
tldr; they panicked and cancelled their initial booking (so cannot claim insurance)> booked another flight only to have it cancelled after checking-in > booked yet another flight that leaves the next day, only to have it delayed by 2-3 hours: they also spent a night at the airport & went to book a hotel room after we convinced them to the 2nd night
2. STEPPED ONTO A SEA URCHIN, HAPPY TO BE ALIVE โ ๏ธ
this one is just a reason why wearing sea boots are so important: so you donโt end up making mistakes like these :โ)
Our friend (letโs call him A) was telling us he was going to explore an area that was quite shallow and normally didnโt have anything dangerous lurking- but just his luck, he managed to impale his foot through a cluster of sea urchin ๐ thankfully it broke off and there were so many nice people willing to come and help him get the spikes out, but he still kena infected in the end poor thing and could barely walk
3. MOSQUITOES + BEDBUGS: OUR 13TH REASON WHY ๐ฆ
We wanted to book an airbnb with a rustic charm..but at what cost? We had no aircon, in the middle of the 38 degree sicilian heat and it genuinely felt like a level in hell. We burned mosquito coil, soaked ourselves in repellent, spent an afternoon going to war with the mosquitoes and fought back (basically catch mosquitoes and leave them at the doorsteps to warn their brethren) - but we swear, Italian mozzies are a different breed
to make matters worse, we also found out that the beds were infested with bedbugs because everyone (except me lol) woke up with their limbs covered in bites ๐ญ but okay la weโre living the Italian summer dream right?
4. AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE, JUST WALK BRO ๐ท
You think Grab in SG is expensive? wait till you realise a 7 min trip by WALKING is โฌ38 (SGD$40+) bruhh
Now before you say anything, we only used uber cabs whenever we had all our luggage with us, and the one time our friend (this one we call M) twisted her ankle and basically couldnโt walk anywhere ๐ unfortunately there wasnโt any metro at some areas/buses take forever, so it would explain why cars are in such a high demand. Now local cabs are an option too, but you might risk getting overcharged as a tourist sadly
Now the other stories are just funny/the price of unpreparedness, but regardless of all that, we did eventually have a fun time making lots of core memories on the trip- and surprisinglyโฆ we never got pickpocketed once! ๐ if youโve made it this far, thank you so much for reading, we hope you found it as entertaining as I did compiling all this
