Once rated the world’s second most dangerous city by Lonely Planet, Nairobi has high crime rates and some history of terror attacks. Here’s how to stay safe:

Get around: Use Uber, not public transport, especially local minibuses.

Night time: Stay indoors after 7 PM. Avoid dark streets.

Where to stay: Pick your accommodation carefully. East of Moi Ave is risky; the west side is safer.

Avoid trouble: Steer clear of police/military and don’t take random photos.

Slums: Don’t visit slum areas without a local guide.

Phone safety: Don’t stand on the roadside using your phone – move inside or away from the street to avoid thieves.
