I’ve never been rich, but I have ALWAYS loved to travel. In highschool, I worked at a restaurant part time to make travel money, but after I graduated, I switched to full time & worked 40-50hrs a week to fund the trips of my dreams faster, haha!! 🌍

Now you don’t make a lot of money working in restaurants, but if you’re frugal & clever, you can make that little money go a long way! Which is exactly what I did. After exploring the world for about 7 years now, I’ve nailed down some ways to cut costs on trips & I’m going to share them :)

☆ TRAVEL IN OFF-SEASON 🌞

A lot of people book their trips in the heart of summer or during popular holidays, but if you’re able to: travel during off-season! Prices will be at their height during peak season, but you can get the cheapest deals on both flights AND accommodation during off season. Plus, you’ll avoid the tourist crowds! It’s a win-win.

☆ SPLIT THINGS 👯‍♀️

One of the perks of traveling with friends is the ability to split the cost of things! You can stay in cool airbnbs for a fraction of the price, Uber rides will be cheaper, & food will be cheaper if you share dishes!

☆ BUY FLIGHTS WHEN THEY’RE CHEAP ✈️

When planning a trip, find the cheap flight first & build the rest of your trip around that! Cheap plane tickets come with flying in off-season, sleeping in the airport, having long layovers, booking a bunch of separate 1-ways, & not paying for any extra amenities on flights. This is how I always travel & trust me: it’s never glamorous haha, but ALWAYS worth it 😁

☆ DON’T CHECK A BAG 🧳

Thiiiiss is probably my biggest tip & idk hardly anyone who does this. I do it for every single trip I go on (yes, I packed for 2 weeks in Greece & Italy in just a carry on + personal item), which has saved me hundreds of dollars! Airlines usually charge between $40-$60 for a checked bag each way, but a lot of airlines have the option of free carry-ons! So you already know I have become a PRO at fitting every little thing into my carry-on + personal item backpack.

☆ STAY IN HOSTELS ⛺️

If you’re traveling alone, staying in hostels is the way to go! They’re literally the BEST & so cheap. I’m talking like $8-$19 a night! You also get to meet cool people doing the same thing as you! I’ve volunteered in a couple hostels & spent 3 months in & out of them. That was one of my favorite seasons of life :)

☆ GROCERY SHOP 🍎

Just like when you’re at home, it’s always cheaper to grocery shop rather than eat out. I know you’ll wanna try some of the foreign food in whatever country you’re in, but if you’re feeling low on funds, make a lil trip to the grocery store ;)

☆ WALK / PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION 🚃

Verrrryyyyy rarely do I take private transfers or rent a car (especially if I’m traveling solo) because that is crazy expensive!! If you’re traveling with friends, renting a car can be cheap & may be necessary depending on your location. But I’m definitely a walker or public transport girly. Public transport can be hard to figure out at first; but you’re smart, you can do it! Once you’ve figured it out, you feel so accomplished & your bank account is happy 😆

If you apply all of these tips to your travels (even just some of them!), you’ll easily save hundreds of dollars & be able to explore so many new countries 🌍
