~This is the story of how I died~
Actually, the truth is, it isnât even mine.
This is the story of a girl named Rapunzel
And it starts with a flowerâŚ
(I had to with that intro haha)
Born into royalty,
stolen into captivity.
Rapunzel had more than her birthright taken from her:
Her true identity was swept under a rug, kept secret from her for her entire life.
She grew up not knowing who she really was.
Her identity came from the lies Gothel would whisper in her ear:
âYouâre naĂŻve. Youâre not that great. Youâre a bit chubby. Youâre positively frumpy.â
Until Gothel got what she wanted:
âYouâre lovely, my flower.â
But then back again:
âI know better than you.
Mother knows best.â
Planting seeds of fear of the outside world, terror of thugs and ruffians, & anxiety about bugs, plagues and being underdressed, Gothel successfully convinced Rapunzel that it would be in her best interest to stay inside the tower, where all was safe and soundâŚ
And the same.
Doing the same, old thing.
Day. After. Day.
Rapunzel, like a lot of us, distracted herself
with a routine of chores and hobbies and
exercises to do while watching the day pass by:
Painting and reading and cleaning and cooking,
brushing and playing and hanging and staring into space.
Again, and again, and again.
Every. Single. Day.
Boring!
Entertainment can be great for a while,
but after a while, it does become mundane.
Silence and solitude are where
the big questions come up:
â˘Who am I?
â˘What was I made for?
â˘Do I have purpose for being here?
â˘Why am I here?
These are questions Iâm sure were burning in
the back of her mind. Questions like these, when they go unanswered, make us ansty, like thereâs an itch we canât scratch no matter how hard we try. We can try to distract ourselves from it or convince ourselves that it doesnât really itch THAT bad, but deep down, we know itâs false.
We need those questions answered.
So, like any child would, Rapunzel askes her mother about the floating lights. Why? Because she identifies with them. Something resonates wothin her being - her very CORE- that those lights are meant for her.
And she MUST know why!
âPlease, as a birthday present to me,
Take me to see the floating lights!
(TELL ME WHO I AM)â
But Gothel canât risk Rapunzel being found out.
Not with that hair.
âAhh, you mean the STARS.â
No, no, you silly child. What do you know? Those are stars. They come around, like clockwork, every year. It just so happens that itâs on your birthday.
A detail I forgot to change after KIDNAPPING you!
(Plot-holes, anybody?)
Well, Rapunzel had a LOT of time on her hands (for obvious reasons), and because sheâs a smart homeschooler, she did her homework and CHARTED THE LITERAL STARS.
Gothel is at her wits end, and like any parent at the end of their rope, she lashes out.
YOU. WILL. NOT. LEAVE. THIS. TOWER.
EVER!
And that is what Iâd call a breaking point for Rapunzel.
Instead of talking back, she sinks her head down low.
âItâs ok mother. Just buy me the paint again, like last year.â
Satisfied enough with this answer, Gothel departs, warning Rapunzel not to leave until she returns.
Yeah right, âmother.â
Jokes on you!
I got a MAN hiding in my CLOSET!
Yeah, Rapunzelâs in her rebellious phase;
hiding boys in her wardrobe, sneakinâ around,
knocking out the nearest criminal to sneak
into her tower with her lucky frying pan,
tying him up to a chair with her HAIR
in order to INTERROGATE him.
You know, normal teenage behavior! đ¸â¨
Flynn and Rapunzel come to some sort of an âagreementâ (if you could call it that) about him being her guide and her getting to see the floating lights and all that jazz.
They make their way to an olâ pub âround the corner for some grub. Little beknownst to her, Rapunzel has just been lead into a trap. She is face to face with her greatest fear: ruffians and thugs!
Thanks Flynn; youâre a real slice.
But unbeknownst to Flynn, Rapunzel has a bit of charisma XP saved up that she only uses in dire situations like the one you placed her in. âPunzy smooshes the people with her childlike charm with this catchphrase she manages to squeak out:
âHavenât you ever had a dream?â
And folks, wouldnt you know it, these burly, beaten up, narly men can sing! Theyâre thugs with heart; Ruffians with soul. They got big dreams, even though life has put them through the ringer!
The boys are having one ball of a time, hurling flaming swords in the air, balancing on jugs of ale, and⌠dressing up like cupid đš.
Just when things are about to get real fun, the authorities show up. What a buzz-kill, am I right?
On todayâs menu, theyâll be having Flynn with a side of Rider, so the dynamic duo high-tails it out if there through a secret underground passage (âcuz its a speak-easy, didnât you know?).
In hot pursuit, they barely escape two - no - THREE life-threatening situations until they reach the cavern.
And thereâs when things get vulnerable.
For the second time in the movie, we are confronted with those questions again: Who am I? What am I here for?
Flynn is the first to break. Come to find out heâs actually Eugene, and if that first name wasnât unfortunate enough for him, then a last name of Fitzherbert will do the trick! It would be humiliating if he wasnât on the brink of death. At least someone else would know the truth.
Rapunzel has weird taste in names: She likes Eugene - itâs⌠â¨UNIQUEâ¨. But itâs her turn to be transparent, and she canât think of anything except her hair powers - the only thing sheâs praised and valued for.
âI have magic hair that glows when I sing!â
As water rises higher, Fly- I mean, EUGENE thinks his ears are water logged.
âWhat?â
But thereâs little time. Rapunzel quickly sings the incantation song, drawing a quick breath before theyâre submerged under the water.
Looking around, they look for an escape, anywhere.
Glowing hair points them to an opening, and they burst out of the cavern into a stream.
âWeâre ALIVE!â
âHer HAIR glows!â
That ainât natural!
And thereâs more!
âIt doesnt JUST glow đâ
Rapunzel heals the wound on Eugeneâs hand. Heâs a but creeped out by all of this magic: I think his worldview got shattered a tinsy bit. đ¤
After the healing seance woo woo stuff, Rapunzel and Eugene have a heart-to-heart, for real this time.
Eugene talks about his past as an orphan and turning to thievery as a better way of life. He revelas that he places his identity in what he does, too: stealing. Itâs better than being an orphan, right? Although Flynn Rider was a fictional character, Eugene made him real. Not an ideal way of coping with childhood trauma, but it got him out of the orphanage, gave him a fresh start, and a bit of a reputation - that is all a man has, after all.
Rapunzel, however, has little to no reputation. Instead, sheâs been stuck in a tower doing the same things sheâs always done. Only dreams kept her company - along with Pascal of course. But who was she?
She shows Eugene a secret sheâs never told anyone (mainly because sheâs never MET anyone else): a short, brown lock of hair at the nape of her neck.
She can loose the only thing that makes her special and valuable by cutting her hair.
âThatâs why I never left, andâŚâ
Yes. Never leaving the tower to keep her value for Mother Gothel.
Well, Iâm sure you know the rest of the story:
Eugene and Rapunzel have a great time fooling around the kingdom. They share a romantic moment while dancing, then go on their first date in a boat to watch the lanterns together. Eugene gets double-crossed (literally) by the Stabbo-Bros (thatâs what I call them). Rapunzel returns to the tower with a broken heart. She discovers sheâs the lost princess, and threatens to leave. Gothel locks her in chains and muffles her screams. Meanwhile Eugene breaks out of prison in the best sequence possible. He reaches the tower and finds Rapunzel tied up, and gets stabbed in the back. Rapunzel begs Gothel to let her heal him, promising her to never leave after heâs healed. Eugene, knowing Rapunzelâs biggest secret, chops her locks, thus setting her free from Gothelâs tyranny.
The one thing that she thought gave her value, lost.
The one person who saw her true value, gone.
All hope vanished.
Only tears remained.
But this was not the end.
Singing the incantation like a lullaby,
Rapunzel cries one last tear,
craddling his face to say goodbye.
Then it happened.
The tear sank into his skin
And gave him new life within.
~poetry~
Eugene came back to life from a small drop of faith!
The couple embraced, and at long last,
the Lost Princess was restored to her family and kingdom.
The End!
~~~
You, my friend, have this ability. The ability to heal those around you. Through prayer and faith in God, we are able to help others see their true worth.
Just like Rapunzel, we can shine our light, transforming the environment around us.
Your identity is in Christ. He is the best person to place your identity in, because He NEVER changes.
Like Rapunzel, we might mistakenly place our worth in our giftings and what we can do. But Jesus wants us to place our value in what He did for us because He loves us!
I hope this recap brought hope (and a little bit of laughter) to you today.
You are lovely, cherished, and valued.
God bless.
