what are some good pets for renters?

alright guys, especially older users of lemon8 who have rented with pets before, i have a question!

what pets would be good for renters? for context, my partner and i are renting the basement-level of a college house and our landlord said no cats or dogs, but i’m getting very lonely without a pet and i miss both my cat and my dog every day.

one of my friends is also a renter and she just got a hamster, but i’m worried about creating a smell in the house if i get one. do we think a fish is a good idea? or maybe some kind of small hamster? i’m working full-time so i’m prepared to spend the money to get a good quality of life for whatever pet i might get. i’m just not sure and open to suggestions!
