If you havenāt watched the Bridgerton series, donāt worry about it! This netflix series is a prequel to the other two Bridgerton shows. There may be some references that you canāt catch, but nothing too much that you canāt enjoy this show without prior knowledgeš
This series started off with Charlotte reluctantly marrying into the royal family, and eventually how she has to deal with King Georgeās illness, and the love story between them. It switches between the current Bridgerton seriesās timeline and the young George and Charlotteās timeline, so you get to learn about some charactersā backstories besides the king and queenās. If you watched the Bridgerton series, you know the queen as somewhat demanding and wants everything her way. Thereās little to no mention of the king, and I almost thought the queen hated the king. But this series gave the queen and kingās side of the story and brought so much life into their characters that I wished I have a love this strongš„¹
If you like romance shows and still havenāt watched it, you should definitely go watch! Itās number 1 š„ in the top 10 shows in SG today on netflix anyway. Oh thereās some sexual scenes so be warnedš„
Any further than here will contain spoilers so if you donāt want to spoil yourself, STOP here and go watch!!
šŗ Itās only 6 episodes long, and I finished the series in one Sunday. Though I feel like episode 4, the episode that repeated everything but in Georgeās perspective, may be a bit redundant, I can see why the producer made it this way. If they were to show both sides of the story at the beginning, the effect wouldnāt be as significant. The first 3 episodes show George as being hot and cold š©, and itās really episode 4 that shows how much George really loves Charlotte.
š These are partially true events! Of course itās not completely true, not even historians know for sure how the real relationship between King George III and Queen Charlotte was. But according to google, there were evidence to suggest they were deeply in love, until the onset of the kingās mental illness. Princess Charlotte Augusta indeed passed away in childbirth and there was a period of time where the crown had a succession crisis and the 13 children of Queen Charlotte were pressured into have babies. The show ended with the good news that Prince Edward and Princess Victoria became pregnant, and in history, that kid becomes Queen Victoria. And after watching a netflix show Iām suddenly interested in this particular timeline of history.
šµ Like the other Bridgerton shows, they have great music. I love the classical renditions of pop songs I didnāt even know pop songs can sound so good in classical style!
š§ Wise words. The iconic quote from George āI am born for the happiness or misery of a great nation, and consequently must often act contrary to my passionsā was actually written by King George in real life! I also especially like Queen Charlotteās advice to her son when he was getting married āLove is determination. Love is a choice one makes. You take someone in marriage, and you choose to love them.ā Marriage (or rather being in a long term relationship) is difficult. One trick to keeping the relationship alive is to choose your partner, put in the effort for your partner, everyday. Ahhh this is so true!
š„¹ The ending scene broke me. In the previous Bridgerton shows, it seemed like Queen Charlotte didnāt like King George, and even during this show when it switches to the current timeline, sheās asking if heās dead, which kinda makes you think she wants him to die sooner. But the last scene, she goes to Georgeās room in Kew excited to share about the good news and happy things in life with her husband. Although heās in his unstable mental state, she knows how to get him to come back by going under the bed, just like what happened in their younger days. The last sentence, where George mentioned how she did not go over the wall, brings the show back to the first episode where Charlottes tries to escape, and the scene flashes between the younger them, to show that he still remembers her and their love story, despite his mental condition. SO TOUCHINGGGšš
There are other themes in the show, like racism and the role of women in those times. The young Queen Charlotte acting is so good! How she portrays her love, frustrations, anger, etc itās so realistic I almost felt as angry as she is. Thereās a bit of homosexual scenes, though I donāt particularly like it. I feel like theyāre trying too hard to fit that in?
Anyway Iāve said enough on how much I like this show, if you have watched it too let me know what you think!
*I donāt own any of these pictures I just took them from google!
