How Much I Made as a Self-Published Author

Hey there! 👋

I’m new to Lemon8 but I’ve been in the self-publishing game for a while, and recently decided to embark on a new journey: leaving my six-figure pen name behind for a whole new genre.

Yeah, that probably sounds nuts to you, but I promise, I have reasons I’ll get into in more detail in another post if anyone is interested. 📚

The long and short of it is that the publishing industry has changed a LOT in the seven years I’ve been doing this, and I’ve changed even more. The stories I enjoy writing have changed, too. That, and the genre I’m in has shifted to where authors have to churn out books at more of a rapid fire pace than ever, and after nine years and several cycles of burnout…

I’m over it. 😫

It’s one thing to write feverishly in a genre you love, but when the writing stops being about joy? Yeah, that’s not fair to yourself or your readers.

So! 2024 is the year that I’m switching gears and starting from scratch in a completely different genre with a completely fresh pen name, equipped only with the skills and knowledge I have from the last nine years.

Whew! 😅

Obviously, I’m taking a huge risk and it might totally flop, but hey, life’s all about risk and reward! And since I’ve done a little coaching in the past, I know the one thing most of my clients brought up was, “Sure, it’s easy for YOU to say! You’ve been doing this forever.”

And fair enough. It’s one thing to be an established author who already built their platform. Times change and so does the industry. But im in the unique position to be doing this all over again, so I figure it could be useful to other aspiring authors out there to watch someone else’s journey building and launching an author platform 100% from scratch.

Since I’m not sharing my current pen for obvious reasons, I included a screenshot of my Amazon earnings from this year as proof that I’m an established author. I also thought it might be encouraging for people like me, who’ve spent years hearing that self-publishing “isn’t a real job,” which is total BS. 💵

You can absolutely earn a full-time income as a self-published author. I’ve already done it, and so can you, and I’m excited to have you along for the ride as we do it together! 💕
